The Story Behind the Stamp Sheet

The story began in April 2022 with the now-iconic Ukrainian stamp “Russian Warship, Go…!”

Its image referred to the defiant response given by Ukrainian defenders on Snake Island to the Russian cruiser Moskva. Soon after the stamp entered circulation, the Moskva was struck by Ukrainian Neptune missiles and sank in the Black Sea.

The moment transformed the stamp into an international symbol of Ukrainian resistance.

Two years later, Ukraine had achieved something few observers expected at the beginning of the full-scale invasion: Russian naval forces in the Black Sea had suffered a succession of serious losses.

The “Russian Military Fleet – To the Bottom!” issue continues that story.

By the time the stamp sheet was released, Ukrainian forces had sunk, damaged, or disabled numerous Russian vessels, including the landing ships Saratov, Minsk, Novocherkassk, and Caesar Kunikov, the cruiser Moskva, the tug Vasily Bekh, the submarine Rostov-on-Don, and the patrol ship Sergey Kotov.

The artwork also places the Russian frigate Admiral Makarov under a target — a visual reminder that Ukraine’s struggle for control and security in the Black Sea was still continuing.

Why This Stamp Matters

Ukraine does not possess a conventional navy comparable in size to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

Yet missiles, maritime drones, unmanned systems, and unconventional tactics dramatically changed the balance at sea.
