When Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, Chernihiv region became one of the first major areas in the path of Russian forces advancing toward Kyiv.

For more than a month, Ukrainian soldiers fought to stop that advance.

They created obstacles on roads, watched the movement of Russian military vehicles, shared information with Ukrainian defenders and supported the resistance in countless ways.

By April 3, 2022, Russian forces had been pushed out of Chernihiv region.

But each of the four places represented in this stamp set carries its own story.

Chernihiv – A City That Refused to Fall

Chernihiv endured weeks of attacks and heavy destruction.

Yet Ukrainian defenders and residents prevented Russian forces from occupying the city.

The resistance of Chernihiv became an important part of the defense of northern Ukraine and helped stop Russian troops from using the region as a route toward the capital.

The stamp dedicated to Chernihiv honors both those who defended the city and the civilians who continued helping one another throughout the siege.

Nizhyn – Resistance Behind the Front

Nizhyn also stood in the way of Russia’s attempt to dominate the region.

Semenivka – A Route to Safety
