The Sunflower as a Symbol of Remembrance
August 29 was established in Ukraine as the Day of Remembrance of the Fallen Defenders of Ukraine. The date is closely connected with the tragic events near Ilovaisk in 2014, when Ukrainian soldiers attempting to leave through a promised humanitarian corridor came under attack.
The route passed through fields of blooming sunflowers, and the sunflower became a national symbol of remembrance for Ukraine’s fallen defenders.
Ukrposhta released the “Eternal Memory!” stamp on August 29, 2023, continuing this tradition of remembrance through Ukrainian philately.
