The Story Behind the Stamp

What makes this issue especially interesting is that Ukrainians helped choose it themselves.

The phrase “Good Evening, We Are From Ukraine!” was selected by the public from five proposed subjects for a new wartime stamp. Then artists were invited to submit their interpretations.

Around 1,500 designs were submitted, and nearly 900,000 people participated in the public voting. Anastasiia Bondarets’ illustration received more than 340,000 votes, making it the clear winner. 

Bondarets explained that her artwork represented the idea that every Ukrainian was doing what they could, in their own way, to bring victory closer. 

Her tractor-and-tank image perfectly captured that spirit.

Why a Tractor?

During the first months of the invasion, images and stories of Ukrainian farmers towing abandoned or captured Russian military vehicles with tractors became one of the unexpected symbols of the war.

The stamp itself depicts a real-life story connected with the Sumy region, where a Ukrainian tractor pulled a Russian tank. 

Against the horror of war, the image carried a particularly Ukrainian mixture of courage, practicality, and humor.

A Phrase That Became Part of Ukrainian Culture

By the summer of 2022, “Good Evening, We Are From Ukraine!” was far more than a greeting.
