Heroic Professions: Angels of War – Ukrainian Medical Workers Stamp Sheet

Honor the extraordinary courage of Ukraine’s doctors, paramedics and combat medics with the “Heroic Professions: Angels of War” collectible Ukrainian stamp sheet. Released in 2024, this powerful issue is dedicated to the civilian and military medical professionals who evacuate the wounded, work in ambulances and operating rooms, and continue saving lives under some of the most dangerous conditions imaginable.

Ukrainian defenders often call these medics “angels of war” — people who appear when someone is wounded, frightened and most in need of help.

The Story Behind the Stamp Sheet

War has transformed the work of thousands of Ukrainian medical professionals.

A medic may be treating a wounded soldier only minutes after an attack. An ambulance crew may have to reach people while shelling continues nearby. Surgeons in frontline hospitals can work through the night as casualties arrive one after another.

Civilian doctors and nurses also care for people injured when homes and communities are struck.

Their work often takes place close to danger. Yet the goal remains the same as in any hospital anywhere in the world:

save a life.

That is why Ukrainian soldiers began referring to medics as “angels of war.”

The name reflects not only their medical skill, but also the extraordinary reassurance of knowing that when someone is wounded, there are people willing to risk their own safety to reach them.

The Heroic Professions: Angels of War stamp sheet preserves that story in miniature.

From the Battlefield to the Operating Room

The designs represent two sides of wartime medicine:

• Medics on the battlefield — providing emergency care and evacuating wounded people from dangerous areas
• Medics in the operating room — doctors and surgical teams continuing the fight for a patient’s life after evacuation

Together, they tell the story of the chain of people required to save one wounded person — from the first lifesaving intervention to surgery and hospital care.

A Charity Issue Helping Frontline Hospitals

The original release also had a charitable purpose.

From the sale of each stamp sheet, UAH 20 was directed toward helping hospitals in Ukraine’s frontline regions.

That connection makes the collectible particularly meaningful: the stamps honor Ukrainian medical workers while the original issue also helped support hospitals working close to the war zone.
