“Mission Truth” honors the Ukrainian journalists, photographers, camera operators, and war correspondents who risk their lives so the world can see what is happening in Ukraine.
Released in 2025 as part of the Heroic Professions series, this complete Ukrainian collectible set includes a sheet of 6 postage stamps, a First Day Cover, and a matching thematic card.
It is dedicated both to the media professionals who continue documenting Russia’s war against Ukraine and to those who were killed while carrying out that mission.
The Story Behind “Mission Truth”
War is fought not only with weapons.
It is also fought with information.
Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, journalists have worked from cities under attack, frontline communities, hospitals, bomb shelters, destroyed villages, and liberated territories to document what they see.
Their photographs, videos, interviews, and reports have shown the world the aftermath of atrocities in Bucha, Izyum, Mariupol, Yahidne, and many other Ukrainian communities.
They document destroyed homes.
They speak with survivors.
They record evidence of war crimes.
They photograph evacuations and funerals.
They report from places where another missile or drone may arrive at any moment.
Without them, many of these stories might never reach the outside world.
Their Weapon Is the Truth
Russia’s war against Ukraine has also been accompanied by disinformation and attempts to distort or deny events on the ground.
That gives journalism an especially important role.
A photograph can preserve evidence.
A video can show what happened.
A witness can tell their story.
And a journalist can make sure that story is heard beyond Ukraine.
That is the meaning behind “Mission: Truth.”
The people represented by this issue do not carry weapons into battle in the conventional sense.
Their weapon is the truth.
Honoring Journalists Who Never Came Home
The issue is also a memorial.
Journalists and other media professionals have been killed while covering Russia’s war against Ukraine. Others have been seriously wounded, detained, or placed in extraordinary danger simply by doing their jobs.
“Mission Truth” recognizes that courage and remembers those whose work ended with their lives.
The postal issue was created in partnership with the Georgiy Gongadze Prize, one of Ukraine’s important professional journalism awards. Georgiy Gongadze himself became an enduring symbol of the struggle for independent journalism and freedom of speech in Ukraine.
Created by Ukrainian Artist Anton Lohov
The artwork was created by Ukrainian artist Anton Lohov.
The stamp belongs to the Heroic Professions series, which tells the stories of people whose work has become particularly important during the war.
Rather than portraying journalism as an ordinary profession, this issue recognizes Ukrainian media workers as people performing a public mission — preserving evidence, challenging propaganda, and making Ukraine’s voice heard around the world.
