Discover ancient Slavic mythology through this striking Ukrainian EUROPA postage stamp sheet dedicated to Svarog, the god of fire, blacksmithing and creation. Issued by Ukrposhta in 2022 as part of the international EUROPA “Stories and Myths” series, this collectible stamp sheet combines Ukrainian cultural heritage, mythology and contemporary graphic art.
In Slavic tradition, Svarog is associated with fire and blacksmithing and is believed to have created the Universe, Earth, animals and humankind. One of the earliest written references to Svarog appears in the ancient chronicle Tale of Bygone Years.
About the Design
The stamp was created by Ukrainian artist Mykolai Kochubei, who incorporated ancient symbols into the composition. The Svarga, a cross-shaped symbol associated with holiness and spiritual power, is woven into the movement of horses, while the double helix of DNA represents continuous movement, life and evolution.
The Svarog issue forms a pair with Ukrposhta’s EUROPA Lada – Goddess of Motherhood stamp, celebrating two important figures from Slavic mythology.
