A tribute to the resilience, unity, and unbreakable spirit of Volnovakha

Perched on one of the highest points of the Azov Upland, the city of Volnovakha was among the first to face the full force of Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022. As a key railway hub linking Mariupol, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia, it became the site of fierce and devastating battles during the early days of the war.

The people of Volnovakha — who had famously formed a 2,000-person human chain in 2016 with the message “Donbas is Ukraine!” — stood side by side with Ukraine’s defenders, bravely resisting the onslaught. But after two weeks of relentless shelling, the city was nearly reduced to rubble, forcing its residents to evacuate.

To honor their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering patriotism, President Volodymyr Zelensky awarded Volnovakha the title “Hero City of Ukraine” on March 6, 2022.

This stamp issue from Ukrposhta is part of the “Cities of Heroes” series and features the powerful slogan “I am Volnovakha. Je suis Volnovakha” — a phrase that became globally recognized after a deadly terrorist attack in 2015, when Russian-backed forces opened fire on a passenger bus and Ukrainian servicemen near the city.
