Ukrainian Embroidery — The Code of the Nation
Ukraine does not have one single style of vyshyvanka.
Embroidery traditions developed differently from region to region, creating distinctive combinations of patterns, colors and techniques. A shirt from Chernihiv can look very different from one created in Bukovyna, Volyn, Poltava or Odesa.
That regional diversity inspired the “Ukrainian Embroidery — The Code of the Nation” postage series, launched in 2018.
Rather than using modern interpretations of traditional embroidery, the designers based the stamps on actual historical textile artifacts, including pieces preserved in the Ivan Honchar Museum collection.
The result is more than a decorative stamp series — it is a miniature archive of Ukrainian cultural heritage.
The Chernihiv Vyshyvanka
This particular stamp represents the embroidery tradition of Chernihiv region in northern Ukraine.
The detailed geometric embroidery transforms beautifully into stamp form, allowing the texture and rhythm of the original needlework to become the central artwork.
The stamp was issued on August 23, 2019, alongside designs representing Chernivtsi, Cherkasy and Volyn regions.
And its design received international recognition.
An Award-Winning Ukrainian Stamp
In 2020, the “Shirt (fragment). Chernihiv Region” stamp took second place at the international Nexofil Awards in Madrid in the category recognizing the world's best stamps produced using offset-printing technology.
That makes this sheet particularly interesting for collectors: it represents Ukrainian folk culture while also being an internationally recognized example of modern Ukrainian stamp design.
More Than a Beautiful Pattern
Vyshyvanka has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Ukrainian identity.
But behind every embroidered shirt are regional traditions passed through generations. Patterns and techniques could identify where a garment came from, while embroidery accompanied Ukrainians through celebrations, family events and everyday life.
Today, vyshyvanka continues to connect Ukrainians around the world with their heritage.
This stamp captures that tradition in one small but meaningful piece of Ukrainian history.
A Meaningful Ukrainian Collectible
This stamp sheet is a wonderful choice for:
- collectors of Ukrainian postage stamps
- Ukrainians living abroad
- lovers of vyshyvanka and Ukrainian embroidery
- collectors of folk art and textile history
- Ukrainian heritage gifts
- anyone building a collection representing the different regions of Ukraine
