Stamp Sheet “City of Heroes: Mariupol” — Honoring Courage and Tragedy

A tribute to the defenders of Mariupol and the innocent lives lost.

On March 16, 2022, a Russian warplane dropped two powerful bombs on the Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theater in Mariupol, where more than a thousand civilians — including women and children — were sheltering from relentless shelling. In front of the theater, a massive sign reading “CHILDREN” was clearly written on the ground to deter an attack. It was ignored.

The devastating strike reduced the building to rubble, and hundreds of people lost their lives beneath the ruins.

To honor the memory of the victims of this war crime and those who bravely defended the city, Ukrposhta has released a powerful stamp issue: “City of Heroes. Mariupol.” These stamps are coated with real steel particles from the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works, the legendary fortress where Ukrainian defenders made their final stand.

This is the first time thermographic technology has been used in Ukrainian stamp production, made possible through a collaboration with world-renowned Cartor Security Printers (France).
