“I’m FINE:))” is a powerful Ukrainian collectible about the strange meaning of saying “I’m fine” when life around you has been transformed by war.
Released in 2025, this Ukrainian stamp sheet is based on the monumental I’m Fine art installation created by Ukrainian artist Oleksiy Sai together with the Ukrainian Witness project.
The original installation was built from real objects damaged by war in Ukraine — bullet-riddled road signs, destroyed fences, solar panels, satellite dishes, city signs, and fragments collected from affected and liberated Ukrainian territories.
From a distance, the enormous words I’M FINE look almost cheerful.
Up close, the story changes completely.
The Story Behind “I’m Fine”
“How are you?”
“I’m fine.”
It is one of the most ordinary exchanges in the world.
Sometimes we say it automatically even when we are tired, frightened, grieving, or overwhelmed.
For Ukrainians living through war, those two words have acquired an entirely different weight.
People continue working.
Children continue going to school.
Families celebrate birthdays.
Businesses reopen after attacks.
Someone cleans broken glass from a window and goes back to work.
And when friends abroad ask, “How are you?”, the answer may still be:
“I’m fine.”
The I’m Fine installation plays with that contradiction.
It was inspired in part by the familiar ironic idea of insisting that everything is fine while surrounded by disaster. But in the Ukrainian context, the phrase carries another meaning as well:
We are still here.
Made From the Physical Remains of War
The original installation was enormous — approximately 32 meters long, 7 meters high, and weighing more than 10 tons.
Its letters were assembled from authentic objects damaged during Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Road signs pierced by bullets.
Fragments of destroyed buildings.
Broken fences.
Damaged solar panels.
Pieces that once belonged to ordinary Ukrainian towns and communities.
Every object had already lived through its own story before becoming part of the artwork.
Placed together, they formed two deceptively simple words:
I’M FINE.
Ukraine at Burning Man
In 2024, the installation travelled from Ukraine to the Burning Man festival in Nevada, USA, where it introduced thousands of international visitors to the physical reality of the war.
Among the colorful and experimental installations of the Black Rock Desert, the Ukrainian work stood out because its materials were not created to imitate destruction.
They had actually survived it.
Visitors could walk close to the structure and see bullet holes, twisted metal, and damaged surfaces.
From far away: I’m Fine.
From close up: the cost of war.
That contrast is what makes the artwork so powerful.
From Monumental Art to Ukrainian Stamps
In January 2025, the story of I’m Fine was transformed into a Ukrainian postage stamp issue.
The collectible sheet contains 4 large-format stamps, allowing the details of the installation to remain visible even in miniature.
It is an unusual meeting of contemporary Ukrainian art, documentary evidence, wartime history, and philately.
For collectors, the sheet preserves a work that took Ukraine’s experience of war to an international audience and turned damaged everyday objects into a message of survival.
